Day 2 at the 2022 European Young Masters was played under ideal conditions and a warm sun. The top U16 girls and boys continued their journey to reach the top of the leaderboard of their respective category and to help their nation in the team classification.
GIRLS
The girls played later in Round 2 and the hot weather left an impact on the overall average of the girls’ scores.
Inês Belchior from Portugal stood out from the field, she scored four birdies on the front nine holes but also suffered from two bogeys on holes 6 and 12. She finished her round with a birdie on the 18th green to card a solid 69 (-3). Belchior is the only girl with an under-par total after two rounds, she is standing with 141 (-3) at the first position before the final round, with a three shot lead.
Following her, and tied in second position are Maggie Whitehead from England, Perla Sol Sigurbrandsdóttir from Iceland, Round 1 leader Marie-Agnes Fischer from Germany.
Whitehead played a round of level-par 72, she started with a bogey on the first hole but then made a series of 11 pars. To follow she made birdies on holes 13 and 16 but unfortunately finished her round with a bogey on 18th hole.
Sigurbrandsdóttir also carded a level par 72 with three bogeys and three birdies. She finished her round with six consecutive pars in order to ensure her place at the second rank.
Fischer started out on fire as she made three birdies on the front-nine holes and was leader of the field, she then suffered on the back 9 and carded a 75 (+3), tying her with Whitehead and Sigurbrandsdóttir. The three players are three shots behind Belchior at a total of 144 (+3).
Another performance which stood out is the one of Spanish Anna Cañado who shot 70 (-2). Cañado started with a double bogey on hole three but then scored 5 birdies and 1 bogey allowing her to reach the fifth position on the ranking at a total 145 (+4), four shots behind the lead.
BOYS
The top European U16 boys were the first group out on the beautiful Linna Golf course. Swedish Neo Berg kept his position at the top of the leaderboard. With the front nine holes played at level par, he then went on to score three birdies on the back nine to finish at 69 (-3). Berg is leading by three shots over his fellow competitors at a total of 135 (-9).
Climbing up the leaderboard after Round 2 is Denny Kloeth from the Netherlands. The dutch player completed the best round of the day, 68 (-4). After being 1-under-par after 9 holes, Kloeth completed a solid back-nine with three birdies including one on the 18th green. His impressive performance has helped him to the 2nd position on the leaderboard with a total of 138 (-6), three shots behind the lead.
Tied at the third position are Czech Louis Klein and Spanish Jorge Siyuan Hao. The two players were already tied at the beginning of the round at the fifth position and managed to complete a strong round of 71 (-1) to gain one 2 spots in the ranking. Klein was able to return a back 9 holes with 2 birdies to recover from his front 9. Hao also performed better towards the end of his round as he was able to finish with a birdie on hole 15 and 18. They are currently at a total of 140 (-4), five shots behind the lead.
NATIONS’ CUP
Sharing the lead for the Nations’ Cup are team Czech Republic and team Spain.
Czech Republic made their appearance at the top of the team classification as they jumped 8 spots from Round 1 thanks to the results of both their boys standing at the 3rd and 5th rank and one of their girls in the top-10 of their respective categories. Spain is also counting the performance of Cañado and Hao to secure the co-lead. Both countries stand at an overall 427 (-5).
Third in the team classification, only three shots behind, is team England.
