The flat, but heavily-bunkered Graham Marsh-designed Kunětická Hora golf course in the Czech Republic received a “heat wave” in more ways than one in the opening round of the European Young Masters.
Playing in up to 35 deg C, two players recorded scores of eight under par. Germany’s Yannick Malik and Norway’s Michael Alexander Mjaaseth both recorded 64s (-8), while Jose Luis Ballester of Spain is only one shot further back.
The visitors from the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) also showed their resilience to the hot weather with Thailand’s Pongsapak Laopakdee returning a 66 (-6) alone in fourth place.
Likewise, Mirabel Ting from Malaysia played 67 to lead the girls on -5 with Francesca Fiorellini from Italy. A further 14 players came in under par.
With the APGC team not competing for the Nations’ Cup, the top European teams remain tightly-grouped atop the leaderboard.
Led by Malik’s 64, Germany sits on -15, with France and Italy close behind on -12 and -11, respectively. Neighbours Portugal and Spain remain in touch on -9, while the best of the Scandinavian countries is Norway on -7 and of the Great Britain and Ireland countries is Scotland on -5.
The full leaderboard and the round two tee times can be found on the championship webpage.
