Finland have won the European Amateur Team Championship at the Faldo-designed course, Sporting Club Berlin.
After finishing in the last qualifying spot for Flight A, the number-eight seeds upset Sweden in the quarter finals 4-3. They also defeated the hosts, Germany, by the same score in the semi-final to reach their first ever European Amateur Team Championship final.
Last year's runners-up, England, who finished second in the stroke play qualifying, were the other team to reach the final.
Finland, who earned promotion last year by winnin the Division 2 Championship, went up early in the tie, claiming both of the morning foursomes matches. That meant that they needed just two wins in the afternoon singles to secure their first division 1 European Team Championship title in any category.
2&1 victories by Matias Honkala and Veeti Mähönen would be enough to claim the trophy.
Denmark defeated hosts, Germany, in the match for third place by a score of 5-2 and took home the bronze medals.
In the other half of the championship, Portugal and Serbia both lost their first two matches in Flight B. This means they occupy the bottom two positions in the final standings and are relegated to Division 2.
Austria played Italy in the match for 13th place, to decide who would claim the last spot in the Divisioin 1 title at Ljunghusen Golf Club, Sweden. In a tight match, the Austrians triumphed 3-2, meaning Italy will join Portugal and Serbia, who were competing in their first European Amateur Team Championship, in the Division 2 event. The relegated teams will be replaced by Belgium, Slovenia, and Wales, who finished first, second, and third respectively in the Division 2 championship this week.
