Germany Win European Senior Men's Team Championship

Germany have won the 2021 European Senior Men's Team Championship title at Sedin Golf Club in Slovakia.

The German team, which included 2021 European Senior Men's Champion, Martin Birkholz, finished fourth after the the stroke play qualifying rounds on a total of +17. England (+2) and Ireland (+5) looked like the teams to beat heading into the match play rounds.

Germany faced Spain in the quarter-finals. Despite losing the foursomes match, they won the first three singles games to progress to the final-four.

They would face number-one seeds, England on the penultimate day.

Despite three of the five matches being decided by just one hole, the German team were able to upset the top stroke play qualifiers by a score of 4-1 and secure a spot in Saturday's final.

France, who upset Ireland in the other semi-final on Friday, were Germany's opponents in the championship match.

France put the first point on the board. Francois Illouz and French Golf Federation President, Pascal Grizot, won the foursomes match 3&1.

Germany responded by winning both of the first two singles matches. Marc Vom Hagen and Ekkerhart Schieffer claimed their third singles wins of the week to put Germany within one point of the title.

Reigning European Senior Men's Champion, Martin Birkholz then secured the decisive point with a win on the 18th hole to give Germany its second European Senior Men's Team Championship title.

In the match for third place, Ireland defeated England by a score of 3.5 - 1.5 to claim the bronze medals.
