The EGA, alongside The R&A, is pleased to announce the exemptions offered to the winners of EGA Championships in 2022.
The 2022 European Amateur Champion, who will be crowned on 25 June at Parador El Saler in Spain, will receive a particularly special invitation this year. The winner will be invited by The R&A to compete in The 150th Open to be played on the Old Course in St Andrews.
Matthias Schmid, who earned an exemption into The 149th Open at Royal St George’s thanks to his win in the 2020 European Amateur Championship, went on to claim the Silver Medal for finishing as low amateur. Rory McIlroy achieved the same feat in 2007 following his European Amateur Championship victory the previous year.
For the first time, The R&A will also extend invitations to Final Qualifying for The Open to the leading 4 players in the European Amateur Championship (besides the champion who will earn a place in the field directly). At least 12 places will be available at Final Qualifying, which will take place at four different venues across the UK on 28 June.
The winner of the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship, to be played at Golf de Saint-Germain from 20-23 July, will also receive a special invitation. The champion will be invited by The R&A to compete at the AIG Women’s Open at Muirfield in August.
New this year, The R&A will also extend invitations to the winners of the European Senior Men’s and Ladies’ Championships, set to be played at Pärnu Bay Golf Links in Estonia. The European Champions will receive invitations to the R&A Senior Amateur (subject to age eligibility) and Women’s Senior Amateur championships, to be played at Royal Dornoch, Scotland from 5 to 8 July.
The entries to the EGA’s individual championships remain open. More information on how to enter can be found here.
