Schmid breaks course record to lead in Austria

Mattias Schmid fired a course-record 63 in round three of the European Amateur Championship to take the 54-hole lead.

The German player started the day in a tied for eighth, but birdied his first four holes to quickly climb up the leaderboard.

"I got off to a great start, and never let it go from there." Said Schmid. One more birdie on the front-nine, and four more on the back side, despite a narrowly missed chance on the 18th green, were enough for a new course-record at Diamond Country Club. "I played great today, I hit almost every green, I missed one may be and made a lot of putts"

Maximilian Steinlechner nearly shot a a 63 of his own. The Austrian player birdied the 16th and 17th holes and left himself with a 10-foot putt for birdie on the 18th. The putt would slip just wide but a 64 means Steinlechner will play in the final pairing in round four after reaching 11-under-par for the tournament.

England's Joe Long went out in 31 on the front-nine, and breifly held a three-shot lead. However, a back-nine 37 would drop him back into a tie for second place with Steinlechner.

Jerry Ji, last year's bronze medallist, finds himself in the mix once again. The Dutch player is just four shots off the pace on nine-under-par and will join Long in the penultimate group on Saturday. Ji couldn't have got off to a better start, holing a 40-foot chip for eagle on the first hole, helping him to a round of two-under-par.

An extra prize is up for grabs in the final round. The champion will also be granted an exemption into The Open Championship next month at Royal Portrush.
