Preview: 2021 European Men's Club Trophy

The 2021 European Men's Club Trophy is set to take place this week at Troia Golf, Portugal.

Reserved for the national-champion clubs from each EGA member country, the competition will be played for the first time in two years, having been cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19.

24 clubs will compete in the 46th edition of the event. The national champions of 23 countries have earned a shot at the European title alongside defending champions, City of Newcastle Golf Club.

The tournament takes place over three days (from Thursday to Saturday), with three players competing on each team. The two best stroke play scores from the teams' three players each day will count for their final totals.

The team with the lowest score will be declared 2021 European Men's Club champions, while the runners-up and third place finishers will receive silver and bronze medals.

Troia Golf, located just south of Lisbon, will provide the test to the players this year. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. course is consistently ranked amongst the best on the continent.

Three former European champion clubs have qualified for the 2021 edition. Real Club de Golf El Prat, representing Spain, have won the championship three times, although their last win came in 1985.

Italian champions, Parco di Roma, will look to add a second title to their 2014 triumph. Finally, City of Newcastle Golf Club, the 2019 winners, will defend their title.

72 players will tee it up this week, of which 61 have registered with handicaps better than 0.

Representing Rosendaelsche Golf Club, Kiet Van der Weele is the highest ranked player in the field. The Dutch international represented the Continent of Europe in the Jacques Léglise Trophy in 2018.
