Sweden Wins European Senior Men's Team Championship

Sweden has won the 2022 European Senior Men's Team Championship in Estonia. 23 teams of six players competed for the title this year at Estonian Golf & Country Club.

The Swedish team earned the 3rd seed in the stroke play qualifying rounds with a total of +16, one shot behind Ireland, and three behind Denmark. They would face defending champions, Germany, in the quarter-finals.

Spain's Carlos Cendra posted the lowest individual total around the tricky Estonian Golf & Country Club layout. Rounds of 74 (+2) and 68 (-4) totalled -2, one shot clear of England's Trevor Foster.

Despite losing the opening foursomes match, Sweden dominated the singles. Wins from Magnus Haglund (4&3), Oscar Hertzman (5&4) and Mattias Pernheden (3&2) secured the decisive to move Sweden into the final four.

In the semi-finals, Ireland stood in the way of the eventual champions. Despite suffering defeat in the foursomes match again, Sweden pulled through in the singles. Three 1-up victories on the 18th booked Sweden's spot in the championship match.

Number-two seeds, England, pushed Sweden to the wire in Saturday's gold-medal match. The English went 2-0 up after winning the foursomes and the first singles matches. Oscar Hertzman (4&3) and Mattias Pernheden (3&2) secured their third straight victories of the week to bring the score to two points each.

The title would be decided by the only match left on the course between Sweden's Magnus Haglund and England's Aide Firman. 21 holes were required to decide the encounter, with Haglund securing Sweden's first title in 10 years on the 3rd hole.

Runners-up England were awarded the silver medals, while Ireland defeated Scotland in the match for third place match to claim the bronze medals.
